International Headlines today have feature a story that we do not see very often. In an age where the news features embassy closings, serial killers, racial injustice, and financial upheavals, I find it refreshing that a story involving a mystery and a miracle, all wrapped into one, captures the world’s attention.
On an isolated stretch of Missouri highway late Sunday morning, a young lady was hit head-on by a drunk driver. Katie Lentz was driving alone when the drunk driver crossed into her lane and hit her Mercedes.
Rescue workers quickly arrived on the scene and worked for over an hour in an attempt to rescue her. They could not free her from the car wreck. Katie was seriously injured, bleeding, and exhausted. The metal on the car was stronger than that of later model vehicles. The metal actually dulled the tools the rescuers used to free Katie.
In the middle of the rescue effort, she asked the workers to stop and allow her a moment of prayer. In that moment, a priest appeared out of nowhere. The road was blocked off for a quarter mile in both directions and there were no cars visible except Katie’s and the rescue vehicle. There were no bystanders or onlookers anywhere to be seen.
The priest carried a vial of annointing oil with him. He prayed with the group and told them that Katie could now be freed. The firefighters stated that a profound sense of calm came over the Katie and the members of the rescue team. Moments later, fresh equipment arrived from a neighboring town and Katie was freed. The rescuers turned to thank the priest but he was nowhere to be seen. No one recognized the man and no one in the town knew who he was.
The riddle of the “angel priest” has become a sensation. Katie’s condition has been upgraded and she is expected to make a full recovery. She suffered from broken bones an lacerations from the accident. Katie Lentz faced her accident with poise, serenity, and prayer. She lay pinned in a car alone, miles from home, and her first thought was to pray. As she prayed, a miraculous event occurred.
Did Heaven answer her with a much needed miracle? Immediately following the appearance of the “priest”, a bewildering series of coincidences occurred, all of which led to the successful rescue of a woman who had been trapped in a crushed vehicle for almost an hour. The rescue workers have no explanation for the remarkable coincidence and the miraculous events of that Sunday morning.
All too often, we seek to dismiss such events in a matter of fact manner. Something happened that morning that has captured the world’s attention. The prayer of a seriously injured young woman captured the attention of Heaven itself. I believe that Heaven sent a messenger down to Missouri and arranged a series of events that led to the saving of her life. Whoever and whatever the “angel priest” really was, he played a vital role in the saving of a life. The calm energy that pervaded the crash scene was pivotal in helping Katie relax enough to bear her ordeal a little longer. In those moments, her life was saved.
We should take a moment to pray and ask for guidance and help from time to time in life. It does not matter the nature of your relationship with the Creator. Prayer, in its purest form, is a powerful tool that can open doors. We have been given a beautiful example of how prayer can save lives. Imagine what the combined prayers of a few million of us could do for the world at large. Thank you Katie for your faith and for your prayers. We are all praying for your speeding recovery.
The driver of the other car in that accident, Aaron Smith, has been charged with a DWI, second degree assault and failure to drive on the right half of the roadway.
There are several Catholic churches in the area to Highway 19 – the nearest being St Paul’s – however, the mystery priest has still not come forward.
